Interpersonal / Communications Skills:
Served frequently in a liaisonal / facilitation capacity between government agencies, institutional officials, industry, aboriginal parties, interest groups and public sector. Success in developing working models that bring together representatives from several interests to discuss, clarify and resolve complex issues. Extensive experience in impromptu speaking, public relations and communication with difficult and crisis issues, often to hostile audiences.
Negotiation:
Success in negotiated resolutions of arrangements between different stakeholders. Patience and persistence in dealing with dispute or mediation situations. Experience in strategic planning for instances of extreme dispute, including civil disobedience.
Strategic planning:
Expertise in strategic planning to address diverse issues. Developed a variety of strategic options within the context of treaty negotiations such as research strategies and consultation plans. Direct experience in strategic planning for aboriginal and non-aboriginal museums including institutional missions and goals, exhibits design and museum policy.
Working history with First Nations:
Negotiations with a number of BC First Nations in matters concerning aboriginal rights, forestry, mining and cultural heritage. Involvement with economic development initiatives in forestry for Haida clients. Working history withBritish ColumbiaandU. S.aboriginal museums. Experience in working directly with U. S. First Nations regarding issues of heritage and cultural resource management.
Applied Policy:
Creation of applied social and environmental polices that affect people everyday. Expertise in understanding how policy must be interpreted clearly by every affected party, and how policy is translated into actions on the ground, beyond the theoretical.
Knowledge of aboriginal issues/law:
In-depth knowledge of current aboriginal issues in natural resource management, consultation on lands and resources, economic development, the New Relationship, the B. C. treaty process, and self-government. Awareness of the many dynamics affecting aboriginal issues, and the complexity of current developments regarding B. C. First Nations.
Project coordination:
Ability to carry out effective projects at all levels of development. Experience in project conception, planning, consultation, promotion, implementation, and evaluation. Capability in utilizing the talents of others, delegating authority to qualified individuals, and overseeing multiple considerations while a project is underway.
Research:
Ability to conduct research in an accurate, creative, and expedient manner using archival sources, libraries, interviews, and computer bases of information. Skills in project management and implementation, strategic planning, concise writing abilities, and awareness of current government policies regarding First Nations. Experience in critical analysis regarding the presentation of aboriginal cultures in museums and other media. Carried out assessment studies of provincial policies regarding aboriginal peoples.
